Hello, I’m Kyoko Nakamura, President of Ginza HIKO.
My phone holds many treasured old photos, including copies of prints and photos taken with a DSLR.
Among them are photos of Men’s Boutique HIKO, newly opened behind Kumamoto City Hall 40 years ago in 1986. I look back at them from time to time to remember where we began.
Among these treasured memories are childhood photos of our customers’ children.

This photo was taken in 1990, 36 years ago, at the entrance of HIKO.
Our founder, Tetsuhiko Nakamura—my father, then 43—is holding a customer’s young son.
I was still in high school then, but often spent time at the shop.
His family would invite me out, and I would sit him on my lap at meals or hold his hand as we went to the movies.
He was all dressed up for his Shichi-Go-San celebration, but insisted:
“No socks!”
Seeing him barefoot in the photo still brings back such fond memories.
Now, that little boy is a father of two. He brought both of his sons to visit us after they were born.

His eldest son and me.

And this is his younger son with my father, taken this spring.
My father and I were overjoyed, feeling like a great-grandfather and grandmother!
We carefully took turns holding the baby.
His soft cheeks and warmth brought back memories of his father as a baby, and tears came to my eyes.

Now, these are the sons of another customer.
This photo was taken 14 years ago, when our shop was in Shin-yashiki, Kumamoto.
They are three brothers, and we have watched them grow since they were babies.
Their very stylish parents chose matching scarves and lapel pins for them at our shop.
I took this photo, and I still remember smiling at how adorable they looked.
And then, 14 years later—what a surprise!
The youngest brother, on the left in the photo above, recently came to help at our Ginza shop while my father and I were away for an event in Kumamoto.

A lapel pin on his chest.
When our staff in Ginza sent me this photo, I couldn’t help but tear up, thinking, “Look how much he’s grown.”
I quickly slipped away behind the scenes to compose myself.
HIKO celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and this month marks 10 years since we opened in Ginza.
Forty years feels like it passed in the blink of an eye, yet looking back, I realize just how much time we have shared.
And I am deeply grateful that so many of your smiles have been part of those years.
The little boy my father once held in his arms is now a father of two.
The boy we watched grow up in Kumamoto now stands in our Ginza shop, wearing a tie and lapel pin.
What a long and precious bond this has become.
At Tsuruya Department Store’s VIP event in Kumamoto, which we have joined since last year, several customers came to see us after more than a decade, saying,
“I heard HIKO was here.”
Some ran to us in tears the moment our eyes met. The joy of reunion was beyond words.
“I was still in my twenties when I first visited HIKO.”
“I was a student!”
“We’ve all gotten older!”
“And our young lady is now running a shop in Ginza!”
We see each other again and share old memories.
Despite all the years apart, once we start talking, it feels as though no time has passed at all.
Business is about selecting products and selling them. That is our work.
But after 40 years, we realize that what remains with us is far more than the products themselves.
Customers who first came as students built careers, families, and welcomed new generations.
For 40 years, our customers and makers have also helped HIKO grow.
“I still have that sweater!”
“I’ll work hard to buy another tie here!”
We are truly grateful for every word.
To those we met in Ginza, and those who have supported us since Kumamoto—
We hope to share many more warm years together.
And may my album continue to fill with new memories.
