Eight and a Half Years in Tokyo, Yet Today, I Write from Kumamoto

It has been eight and a half years since we opened our store in Tokyo.
And yet, today, I am writing this blog from Kumamoto.

With my entire family, including my mother, having moved to Tokyo, I no longer had a reason to “return home,” and so, I had hardly visited my hometown.

But why am I here now?

The story begins last winter.

A gentleman visited our store.

I thought to myself, I recognize this face…

And then he said,
“I used to visit your store back when you were in Kumamoto.”

“Ah!”

The realization made me exclaim out loud.

He was a customer who worked at Tsuruya, a department store in Kumamoto.
He had visited our store about 20 years ago.

He was in Tokyo for business and stopped by to see me, saying,
“Since HIKO moved to Ginza, I wanted to visit and see you again.”

He handed me his business card, which now read “Men’s Apparel”.

Back when he visited our store in Kumamoto, he was in a different department.
But now, he had achieved his long-time dream—he had become a men’s buyer.

“That’s wonderful!”

As we shared our happiness, our conversation soon turned into a nostalgic trip down memory lane…

And then, through this very connection,
I was given the opportunity to participate in Tsuruya’s exclusive sales event, “Kakushokai.”

“I would love for Kumamoto’s customers to see HIKO’s exquisite items once again,”
he kindly told me.

Although he modestly added,
“I haven’t bought much from you myself…”

He then looked me in the eye and said,
“But I can confidently say—HIKO carries truly exceptional products.”

His words deeply moved me.

The young customer I had met so long ago had now returned, after 20 years,
to offer me this incredible opportunity.

Memories of Tsuruya—From a Shopper to a Seller

Back when I lived in Kumamoto,
Tsuruya was always “a place to shop.”

As a child, I used to sit side by side with my mother at Keika Ramen in the basement.
Sometimes, I would go with my grandparents to pick up side dishes for dinner.
I even got lost once, and my name was called over the store’s PA system…

I remember looking forward to the special fairs held at the store.
There was a time when I snuck out of work just to buy cheese from a Hokkaido friend
who had come all the way to sell it.

Tsuruya is a place that holds countless fond memories for me.

And now—
To think that I would one day stand there, not as a shopper,
but as a seller, sharing my own carefully curated collection…

Kakushokai lasts for three days.
On this first day, Friday, as I write this blog,
familiar faces have been visiting one after another since the early morning.

When we appeared on NHK’s popular program “Salameshi,”
they filmed a scene where an overseas customer was enjoying shopping with us via video call.

At that time, Chef Obata, who participated in the program from Thailand,
also came by in person today and warmly said, “Congratulations!”

A couple told me, “We have been looking forward to this day.”
Another kind customer asked, “How are your parents doing?”

And there was even a gentleman who, the moment our eyes met,
burst into tears.

I found myself wiping away my own tears more times than I could count…

“Welcome back.”
“Congratulations.”
“I’m truly happy for you.”
“It’s so good to see you again.”

I was surrounded by countless heartfelt words,
making it a truly unforgettable moment.

To my great delight, we also had customers who learned about us for the first time today,
and some even purchased items such as suitcases.

It truly became the perfect first day.

This blog was written on Friday night and is scheduled to be sent out via LINE and email newsletters on Saturday night, after the second day of the event has ended.

As I write this, I have only experienced the first day.

However, by the time you read this, I am sure I will be saying—
“The second day was absolutely amazing!”

A seed of connection, planted 20 years ago, has finally begun to sprout.
I will give my all to ensure it blossoms into a magnificent flower.
