Following last week,
we’re sharing more photos and videos
taken by our staff member Sato in Italy.

This week features
Silvio Fiorello.

Silvio Fiorello is a necktie brand based in Sicily.

It was founded by Mr. Silvio Fiorello, a former sociologist, who was deeply concerned about the decline of industry and culture in his beloved hometown.
Driven by his passion for neckties, he launched the company with the vision of revitalizing the local community through craftsmanship.

Learn more in our blog:

One day, as our plans for his first business trip to Italy were starting to take shape,

Sato said,
“I’m thinking of visiting the headquarters of Silvio Fiorello.”

“Sicily? You’re going all the way there?”

I was honestly surprised.

I’ve been to Paris, Florence, Milan—sometimes Germany or the UK—but Sicily was uncharted territory.
I didn’t even know if it was doable as a day trip.

But Sato had already decided:
“They said I can see how the ties are made.”
So we adjusted the itinerary.

He arranged everything himself—emails, scheduling, meeting point—and off he went.

I was a bit worried—
and then the first message I got from him was:

“I got carsick from all the mountain roads.”

I couldn’t help but laugh.

Apparently, it took over an hour by car from the airport to the headquarters,
climbing steadily up winding mountain roads.

All those sharp curves really did him in.

That said, we were truly grateful—
it was none other than the founder, Mr. Silvio Fiorello himself,
who came to pick Sato up at the airport!

At 83 years old,
Mr. Fiorello is still actively involved on the factory floor.

He greeted Sato warmly and with great sincerity,
then personally guided him through the entire factory.

Here’s a look inside the factory.
It’s a space that reflects Mr. Fiorello’s vision—
to equip the people of his town with real skills
so they can build lasting livelihoods.

What a coincidence—
the items being made at that very moment
were part of the collection we had ordered.

During a recent meeting at our company,
we had discussed proposing Ascot ties for this fall and winter.
Excited by the idea, we placed an order right away with Silvio Fiorello.

Sato was able to observe the entire production process of these Ascot ties in detail.

To create pleats in the silk fabric,
needles are inserted at equal intervals.
A sheet of paper with slits—cut to match the fabric’s width—
serves as a guide for the process.

“I was surprised by how many needles they used,” Sato said.
“No wonder each tie is checked with a needle detector before it arrives at our store.”

Parts of the tie are sewn with a sewing machine,
but not in a fast, continuous motion.
They remove the inserted needles one by one,
advancing slowly and carefully with each stitch.

Even when ironing, they don’t press down with the weight of the iron.
Instead, they gently glide it over the surface,
as if hovering just above the silk.

Finally, the woven label is hand-sewn on to complete the piece.

It may seem simple when viewed quickly,
but in reality, delicate handwork is present at every key stage.

Another aspect that particularly intrigued Sato during the visit was the story behind the scissors.

The scissors used to cut the silk had an incredibly smooth, satisfying cut—

and according to Mr. Silvio,
“They’re made in Japan!”

Sato couldn’t help but exclaim,
“Whoa!!” in surprise.

At lunchtime, Sato was invited to a room on the second floor of the factory
to share a meal with Mr. Silvio and his family.

“Here, this is for you!”
Mr. Silvio said as he poured him a glass of wine—
such a kind gesture.

Gathered around delicious food,
they all raised their glasses and cheered in Japanese—
“Kanpai!!!”

“Thank you for coming all this way,”
they said warmly.
Sato was truly fortunate to receive such heartfelt hospitality.

To Sato’s surprise,
Mr. Silvio even took him to a local pastry shop in town…

They also stopped by a few locally owned shops,
like small family-run supermarkets.
And each time, Mr. Silvio proudly pointed to Sato and said,
“He came all the way from Japan!”
with a big smile on his face.

Hearing that story truly warmed my heart as well.

“Mr. Silvio is about the same age as our owner,
so I couldn’t help but see some overlap.
It really struck me how strong a founder’s passion can be.

Also, seeing him chatting so happily with the factory staff—
still doing what he loves even past the age of 80—
I thought, that’s truly something special.”

—said Sato as he looked back on the visit.
(I’ve done my best to keep his original tone.)

By the way, if you look closely at the videos and photos,
you’ll notice that Mr. Silvio is wearing different neckties.

It turns out he changed ties partway through the day—
just to show Sato how wonderful his products are.

That’s pure passion.

As Sato said, it was a moment that truly captured
the unmatched energy only a founder can bring.

Sato’s direct visit to Italy
seems to have brought him a wealth of inspiration and learning.

And the same can be said for us—the father and daughter who sent him.

The experience and knowledge gained through this journey,
along with our deepened appreciation for the items we carry,
will surely help us better serve customers
who are seeking something truly special.

We remain committed to refining our craft with even greater care.

The Silvio Fiorello collection we viewed during this visit
is now available both in-store and on our online shop.

Each piece was carefully selected and ordered by us at Ginza HIKO,
