We’re happy to share that our staff member Sato has safely returned from his solo business trip to Italy. This trip took him to two cities: Florence and Milan. In today’s blog (Part 1 of his Italy report), we’ll share his Florence highlights.

Before his trip, I asked him, “Please take lots of photos and videos along the way—and send them as you go.” I was excited to see what he would share, and the very first shot he sent was this.

The lounge drinks corner.
It had absolutely nothing to do with work—so as his boss, I did have thoughts. But then again, I have my own little travel ritual: JAL curry and a glass of sparkling wine for good luck and a safe trip. So I thought, “Well… fair enough.”
And this was the next photo he sent—straight from the plane.

Sato: “It feels like we’re trusting our lives to each tiny component.”
His message suddenly got a little philosophical—and I felt oddly reassured.

Arriving in Paris, the plan was to stay one night at a hotel near the airport, then catch the first flight to Florence the next morning.
“I was going to buy a drink at the airport,” he said, “but between the airport markup and the weak yen, the total came out to a terrifying amount…”
It didn’t take long for him to run into the “difference from Japan”—and it clearly caught him off guard.

Now, there were two main tasks in Florence: visiting the trade fair, and visiting Stefano Ricci.
First up was Pitti Immagine Uomo—often simply called “Pitti”—one of the world’s largest international menswear trade fairs. Pitti is where we look for brands that truly make great things, and where we reconnect with our current partners to exchange ideas and deepen our relationships.

For Sato, there was one person at Pitti he was determined to meet—no matter what.

It was Silvio himself—the founder of the Sicilian tie specialist brand, Silvio Fiorello.
Last June, Sato took on his very first business trip to Italy. He flew all the way to Sicily, then spent over an hour by car to visit Silvio Fiorello’s headquarters and workshop.
At the time, Silvio—83 years old—came to the airport in person to pick him up, and even guided him around the headquarters himself.
Not only that—he even shared lunch with him, and took him to a favorite local pastry shop in town.
Sato was deeply moved by how warmly Silvio welcomed a young visitor from Japan, with the kind of kindness you’d show family.
You can read Sato’s report from that trip here.

This time, he couldn’t make it all the way to Sicily—but Silvio Fiorello was exhibiting at Pitti, so before leaving Japan, Sato reached out to Silvio.
And thanks to that, they were able to reunite for the first time in over six months.

Silvio treats Sato with such affection—almost like a grandson who’s come all the way from Japan. This time, we were truly grateful to receive an invitation as well: “Let’s have dinner together!”

This time, Sato wore the custom twilly we had specially ordered from Silvio Fiorello.
Silvio’s daughter spotted it right away: “Let me see that for a second!” she said—then showed him on the spot how to tie it beautifully.

With a playful “How does it look?” she glanced over toward her father, Silvio, and the others—watching the video later, I couldn’t help but feel warmly moved.
Although I haven’t met them in person yet, HIKO is also a family business—founded by my father and now run by his daughter—so I naturally feel a special sense of closeness.

Sato noticed a unique pair of earrings gently swaying beside Nancy’s face.
“…Wait—this looks familiar…”

When he visited Sicily last June, he had seen a similar ornament at Silvio’s home as well.
“So… is this the same motif I saw back then?” he asked—and Nancy replied with a smile, “Yes, exactly!”
Testa di Moro
It’s a traditional Sicilian motif known as “Testa di Moro” — the “Moor’s Head.”
It’s said to be rooted in a love story from local folklore, and it was originally most often made as a decorative flower vase. Today, the motif is sometimes reimagined as jewelry like these earrings.
The joy and surprise of realizing, “So it was the same motif,” when something you saw in a different place suddenly connects in your mind is a rare intellectual experience. This, too, felt like one of the true pleasures of traveling there in person.

Now, the other mission in Florence was the first round of our meetings with Stefano Ricci.
We can’t share the details of the upcoming collection just yet, but here are a few photos we’re able to show.

This is a corner of the Stefano Ricci booth set up at Pitti Uomo.
It’s a truly luxurious look, featuring generous use of vicuña.

This is an espresso machine. In Italy, people drink espresso as part of everyday life, so it’s not unusual for companies to have a machine like this permanently set up. (I’ve seen one before at Tecknomonster’s factory as well.)

This was taken in the company cafeteria. It seems they didn’t have wine on offer—at least this time.
The meetings themselves are, of course, essential—but I also feel that simply spending time together like this matters just as much.
Casual conversations can deepen mutual understanding and interest, and sometimes even spark new ideas.
I was genuinely happy to know that Sato has been able to share moments like these wherever he goes.
